THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE: THE UNKNOWN ACTOR OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Resumo: Um dos atores fundamentais da política europeia nos séculos XVIII a XX foi o Império austríaco, transformado no Império Austro-Húngaro em 1867. Esse Estado é tradicionalmente ignorado, especialmente em livros publicados em língua portuguesa, enquanto participante do sistema europeu daquele período. Esse artigo procura avançar na direção da superação dessa lacuna, abordando a história desse Estado durante o longo século XIX e tentando destacar a sua importância enquanto participante do ciclo de decisões e interpretações que levaram à eclosão da Primeira Guerra Mundial e nas ações militares durante o conflito.

Abstract: One of the key players in the European system in the last two centuries was the Austrian Empire, transformed into the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867. Austria-Hungary is traditionally ignored, especially in books published in Portuguese, as one of the European Powers, which could be defined as a misunderstanding related to the collapse of this State and society after 1918. This paper aims to fill up this gap, addressing the history of the AustroHungarian State during the “long” nineteenth century and trying to highlight its importance as a participant in the cycle of decisions, interpretations and misinterpretations that led to the outbreak of the First World War and in the battles and other military actions during the conflict.
